COMPOSTING FROM A TO Z: Bokashi, Worms & Home Composting

Household green waste makes up a ⅓ of our waste to landfills - why not compost it instead? Not only will you get brilliant soil conditioner and plant food you’ll also help papatuanuku by cutting down on how much waste is going to landfill! In this workshop you’ll learn composting from small scale suitable for homes without lots of space to systems that would suit a lifestyle block and everything in between! The class will be held at the Tawa Community Garden in Oxford St. Cancellation date if wet is 9 march

FLORA & FAUNA OF OUR LOCAL NATIVE BUSH RESERVES:

Tutor/Facilitator: Gill Roper
6 sessions (3 walks) - Starts on 9 February 7-9pm

The course will include some history of the bush reserves, the origin of their names, how to identify the major native tree species, plus information on studies undertaken in bird surveys, lizard surveys and pest control in the reserves. Three of the sessions will be practical, involving guided walks in different reserves to provide opportunities to identify flora (including the huge tawa and matai trees) and the fauna, as discussed in the classroom presentations.

LEARN TO SEW:

1 Saturday - On 27 February from 9am-4pm

Would love to learn to sew but not sure where to start, and a whole term of courses is not for you? Then this one day course has been designed for you. Come and learn how to use a sewing machine (students may bring their own or use a college Bernina). Work on a selected sewing project (a bag) which will teach you essential skills and leave sewing confident all in one day.

OVERLOCKER BASICS/SEWING WITH KNITS

1 Saturday - On Saturday 13 March from 9am-3:30pm

An introduction to the overlocker, develop skills to use this equipment safely and efficiently. Learn how to use the overlocker for seaming knit garments. Prior Sewing experience essential. Some overlockers are available to use during the course or bring your own

Sewing: Intermediate

8 Monday nights - Starts on 15 February from 6:30-8:30pm

The class will cater for intermediate sewers. All students will be helped, shown techniques and short cuts. Bring pattern, material & sewing kit, current sewing project, or idea to the first lesson.

SOIL BUILDING: Homemade fertilisers, pest and disease control, healthy soil

1 Tuesday night - On 16 March from 5-7pm

Soil is the foundation of any garden. Healthy soils create healthy plants that are resilient to pests, disease and unfavourable conditions. In this workshop you’ll learn some basics on building soil health, creating homemade fertilisers and managing pests and diseases organically. The course will be run at the Tawa Community Garden in Oxford Street. Cancellation date is 23 March if wet.

Learn wood working skills using hand tools and the type of power tools found in the home. Choose your own project at your level of ability and learn skills while completing the project. You provide your own materials. No recycled timber allowed.
