Learn basic drawing skills using pencils, charcoal and watercolour pencils. Create colourful graphic images with both oil pastels or soft pastels. Paint with Acrylics to portray images using a watercolour glaze technique or use thick Impasto Acrylic paint like oils. ART: WATERCOLOUR for Absolute Beginners

FLOWER ARRANGING - FUN WITH FLOWERS

MENDING OUR CLOTHES

Learning a few basic mending techniques will allow you to extend the life of your clothes and keep them out of landfill. In this workshop we will cover a few basic techniques, including useful hand stitches, patching and basic darning. Bring along some items that have been languishing in your closet and we will put these techniques into practice so that you can proudly put them back in rotation. Your instructor will help you identify the right techniques for your specific problems and provide you with the skills to mend them yourselves. Clothing repair is an art not a science, enthusiasm and a few basic tools are all that is required. Please bring along clothing to be repaired and a few basic sewing supplies such as needles and thread, yarn for darning and fabric scraps for patches. Some supplies can be provided on the day but bring what you can.

Metal Jewellery - weekly

This class is all about making metal jewellery. It will cover knowledge of tools and techniques including design, sawing, filing, texturing, soldering, sanding and finishing. Students can expect to make up to three items of jewellery including a ring, a bangle and a stone setting. Health and safety in the workshop is a key learning objective. Students must wear shoes that cover their feet – no sandals, jandals, or slides. Wear comfortable clothing suitable for a workshop. Hair must be tied back. This is for your safety in the workshop. Fee includes silver, copper and the tools needed to complete the projects.

You’ve made a ring and a bangle so how do you extend your skills? Stone setting is one of the most fun things you can do in a jewellery workshop – it’s a little bit magic, a little bit precision and one of the best ways to grow your skills. This is a one-day class where your creativity and all the techniques you learnt previously come together. We will be making a stone setting, and developing this into a finished piece, a ring or a pendant, and wearing it home. Silver, stones and cords are included in the course costs as is copper to practice with, saw blades, solder etc. All tools are provided. You must have completed the Beginners workshop to undertake this class. Returning students welcome. PHOTOGRAPHY - Alternative Photography and Hand made Photobooks

8 Thursday evenings - Starts on 12 February from 6:30 - 8:30pm

Discover the magic of creating with alternative photographic practices and push the boundaries of traditional image making. Learn how to produce photographs using one of the oldest photographic practices; cyanotype while also exploring other alternative photo processes such as lumen prints and anthotypes. This eight week course will also introduce you to the world of hand made (photo) books and a simple hand stitch technique to create your very own. Materials will be supplied to you during the course (payment to tutor for what you use) but you are more than welcome to bring along other creative supplies you wish to experiment with, suggestions for supplies to bring and how best to use them will be given during the course as well. At the end of the course you will walk away with a new found love for the introduced alternative photographic processes and your own handmade book (made by your very own hands) of the wonderous images you created during the course.

We will all be using the same clay. Clay, firing costs, and glazing materials are extra. Please bring $60 materials deposit payable in cash to the tutors on the first night. Please note that glazing will be done on the final week, so it is essential that students can attend on that evening as there are no alternative opportunities to glaze work. Sew a Skirt

Have you wanted to try your hand at garment sewing but been intimated to take the next step? This course is for those who have some sewing experience and are ready to try garment sewing. In this course we will make a simple skirt and include: How to read a pattern Measuring and making minor adjustments Cutting out Darts Insert a zip Faced waistline Hemming Suggested pattern is New Look 6053 (available from Spotlight) as a simple skirt with enough minor variations so you can make what you want. However, if you have a different one please feel free to bring that, we just might not be able to cover extra techniques (such as waistbands and pockets). Please also bring all supplies listed for your pattern, fabric, thread, zip, hook and eye and interfacing as required.

Sewing - Introduction for Beginners

8 Wednesday evenings - Starts on 11 February from 6:30 - 8:30pm

This class caters for the sewer who has no or very little sewing experience, it is also suitable for ESOL students. The course begins with an introduction to sewing equipment and the sewing machine (threading up and winding a bobbin). To learn the basics of sewing you will make a pin cushion and then a tote bag prior to being encouraged to choose another project that will help develop your sewing skills. This can include envelope cushion covers, apron, pillowcases or elasticized waist skirt/trouser or pyjama pant. The course will also cover information on what to look for when purchasing a first sewing machine. The school can provide scissors and sewing machines; all students need to bring their own sewing kit (a list will be sent out by the tutor after enrolment) At the first class, you will need to provide your National Student Number (NSN) or, if you don't have one, please bring your passport or birth certificate as proof of your NZ citizenship or residency.
