ART: WATERCOLOUR for Absolute Beginners

After amazing feedback from students, we are repeating this one day course! Do you think it's hard to paint with watercolour? It sure can be if you don't know how. I can teach you how! In one day we cover some fundamental techniques that enable you to paint subtle lights, solid mid tones and luscious darks without any brush marks, patchiness or those pesky cauliflowers. You can do it when you understand the beautiful nature of watercolour which is to flow...you will also experience a bit of right hemispheric creative play!

CROCHET FOR CHRISTMAS

1 Saturday - 8 November from 10am - 4pm

Get ready for the holiday season and learn how to crochet a range of little projects. From stars and icicles to Christmas trees, and miniature Christmas jumpers and a little Santa hat! You will also learn how to crochet and decorate Christmas baubles! While you might not finish all the patterns this day, the aim is to have a go at making as many as possible! You will need to know some basic crochet stitches such as single and double crochet. You’ll also need to have some understanding of how to read a pattern and work with diagrams, as taught in the beginners’ crochet course. Please bring yarn that you enjoy working with (cotton, acrylic or wool, 4ply or 8 ply) in a variety of colours and a matching crochet hook.

CUSHION CREATIONS WORKSHOP

1 Saturday - Saturday 6 September from 9am - 3pm

Cushions are integral to adding comfort, texture and colour to any room and it is so easy to make your own. This day long workshop will cover some basics of sewing and how to sew your own cushion covers. For those new to sewing we will make a simple cover with no closures and for those more experienced we can add closures, or even sew up a squab. At the end of the day you should leave with at least one completed cushion and the confidence to make more on your own. Sewing machines and tools will be provided, however students are to supply their own materials. If you wish to bring in your own sewing machine you may but please bring the user manual along as well.

Fees: NZ$80 - Bring your own fabric, cotton, cushion insert and zip if needed

PAPERMAKING: USING NATIVE PLANTS

1 Saturday morning - On 6 September 9:30am-12:30pm

Discover the hidden beauty of native plant fibre and learn how to make your own harakeke paper from scratch. Following an introduction to basic papermaking techniques, participants will hone their skills through several projects including sheets of paper, cards, letter writing stationery and more. In addition to the practical skills, the workshop will cover technical aspects of preparing your own pulp using simple household appliances and commonly found plants. Finished harakeke paper typically has a light straw colour and its own unique texture and feel. The paper is suitable for a wide range of uses. All paper produced during the workshop will be pressed and dried by the tutor and sent out to participants 2-3 weeks after the workshop.

SELF DEFENCE ESSENTIALS: Krav Maga(Age 15+)

This 3-hour, self-defense essentials workshop is designed for beginners of all fitness levels, and will provide you with a fun and useful introduction to the fundamentals of the IKMF Krav Maga civilian self-defense curriculum. Whether you have previous martial arts experience or are brand new to self-defense, this workshop will provide you with practical, easy-to-learn techniques that can help you protect yourself in a dangerous or violent situation. By the end of the workshop you’ll leave with the confidence to take action and to effectively respond in a situation, rather than feeling helpless. In this workshop, you will learn: The essential principles of developing a self-defense mindset, including how to use controlled aggression as a tool to defend against violence. We’ll also discuss the key practical, psychological, and legal considerations you need to keep in mind when defending yourself. Simple but effective strikes designed for real-world self-defense situations. Reflexive blocking and deflection techniques that are intuitive and easy to practice. How to use everyday, common objects as self-defense tools in unexpected situations. How to prevent and escape some of the most common self-defense problems. UPHOLSTERY - Getting started (term 3) 3 sessions

3 Saturday mornings - Starts on 23 August from 9am - midday

This 3 week course is designed to get you started or help you continue on an existing project. A longer course will be offered in term 4. Refresh your existing furniture or lovingly restore that op shop find. Start with something simple like reupholstering a footstool, dining room chair or be prepared to do homework and/or a couple of terms and tackle a lounge chair. Modern, retro, vintage all can be refreshed. There are additional material costs. These will vary depending on the size of your project and the condition of your piece of furniture. In older chairs the foam may have decayed and will need to be replaced. You will need fabric and other materials depending on your project. What you will need to purchase will be determined as you discover what is underneath the fabric and what you can reuse. Sewing skills are essential. Also NO leather fabrics, Vinyl maybe Ok but only after discussion with the tutor. For the first session please bring your project, a large rubbish bag and a permanent marker. You don’t need to start anything before the first class but may need to do homework.
