CHEESE MAKING: Halloumi & Ricotta

You make the cheese at this intensely practical DIY 'hands-in' workshops because the key to good cheese making is knowing how the cheese should look and, most importantly, how it should feel at different points in it's creation. During this three hour hands-on workshop, you will be guided through the cheese making process while you make your own Halloumi and Ricotta which you will be able to take home and show off at the end!

CHEESE MAKING: Mozzarella & Brie

This class is now FULL. The ultimate class in practical cheese making! Learn all you need to know to replicate making NZ style Brie and Mozzarella at home. You will be guided through each step of the cheesemaking process while making your very own round of Brie. Then, while the Brie is ripening and setting (don't worry, all terminology will be explained!), we will make Mozzarella – (yum!) together.

HANDMAKING PAPER USING NATIVE PLANTS

This class is now FULL. Paper comes from plants. Aotearoa has lots of really fibrous plants. So let’s make come paper from our local native plants. Come and learn how to make paper while making a new friend or two and developing a deeper appreciation for native plant resources. No experience necessary just a willingness to roll up your sleeves and get your hands wet! The paper we make takes a few days to dry and then will be posted back.

LEARN TO SEW: (November)

This course is a perfect opportunity to learn some basic sewing skills. You will learn how to read a pattern, how to cut out fabric, how to thread a sewing machine and change settings, basic sewing skills (straight and curved seams) and hand sewing as you work on constructing a bag. The pattern will be provided by the tutor; you will need to supply fabric, zip and thread (see enrolment page).

MACHINE QUILTING WITH RULERS:

For this class you will need to have a specialised Ruler Foot suitable for your sewing machine. This is not a free motion foot. I have some examples below. This is very important, without a ruler foot you will not be able to use any rulers for quilting.

METAL JEWELLERY: Beginner

This course is now FULL. Making silver rings and things…..learn a range of jewellery making techniques including forming, shaping, soldering, texturing, sawing, filing and finishing. The emphasis is on practical skills leading to finished items of jewellery. The silver for a ring and a bangle is included in the course costs as is copper to practice with, saw blades, solder etc. Silver to make additional items can be purchased at a reasonable price. All tools are provided. No previous experience necessary. We will be working with hot metal and tools so workshop clothing and covering footwear please; no open shoes, slides, sandals or jandals allowed. This is for your safety in the workshop.

PATCHWORK: Sashed 4 Patch

This is an ideal project for using those 5” charm squares that we are all so drawn to. To give your quilt some repetition, you could also dip into your stash and cut from 2 different fabrics for the 4 patch block, and cut from one colour family for the sashed block. Whatever way you choose I am sure that this could be a real stash busting quilt.

Have you found a garment that fits you well and you wish you could clone it? By learning to create a pattern from an existing garment you will have the skills to do so. In this course you will be shown how to create a pattern from an existing garment. You will then have an opportunity to apply this knowledge as you work on your own pattern/s for your chosen garment/s. Sewing and/or basic pattern knowledge is recommended as you should be familiar with terms such as seam allowance, straight grain, bias, darts etc.
