BALINESE MEDITATIVE ANCIENT MUSIC:

Bali has one of the richest and most varied musical traditions in the world with many different types of bronze, iron and bamboo- keyed instruments and gongs. Now for the first time in Aotearoa you will have an extremely rare opportunity to experience the ancient music of gamelan Selonding: instruments with giant slab iron keys that date back to the 10 th century and produce an ethereal, meditative sound. Your guru will be Vaughan Hatch, gamelan music researcher, ethnomusicologist and founder of Mekar Bhuana Centre

Guitar: Beginner & Intermediate

Tutor/Facilitator: Don Franks
8 Wednesday nights - Starts on 16 February from 7-9pm

This course will show beginners how to form basic chords and use them to accompany a range of songs. Students will learn several different strums and a simple but effective finger picking technique. Bring your own guitar. Intermediate students will work on the same material, but learning and using more advanced playing methods. You will have at least one hour tutor contact time with beginners and intermediate split into different sessions on the first night.

Musical Keyboard Skills:

Tutor/Facilitator: Jean Hollier
8 Monday nights - Starts on 14 February from 6:30-8:30pm

Learn to use the musical keyboard. One hour individual and group tuition plus practice time using the schools' electronic keyboards. Usually split into 2 groups with start times of either 6.30 or 7.30pm. Please bring your own headphones.

Orchestra

32 Monday nights - Starts 14 February from 7:30-9:30pm

The Tawa Orchestra is a community orchestra that attracts players of all ages and walks of life. No audition required – minimum standard Grade V. You will learn the dynamics of being part of a full orchestra including rehearsal techniques, sectionals, and performance. The Tawa Orchestra will perform at least 3 concerts throughout the year and may include collaborations with other community groups and visiting artists. New members can join at any time. Inquire about the fee if you are starting during the year.

SONGWRITING:

Some people think songwriting is a mysterious, unexplainable process. But luckily, those people are wrong. Like most things, writing songs is much easier when you’re equipped with the right tools. Like with any job the more tools you have and the better you use them, the easier the job is.
