CROCHET FOR CHRISTMAS

1 Saturday - 8 November from 10am - 4pm

Get ready for the holiday season and learn how to crochet a range of little projects. From stars and icicles to Christmas trees, and miniature Christmas jumpers and a little Santa hat! You will also learn how to crochet and decorate Christmas baubles! While you might not finish all the patterns this day, the aim is to have a go at making as many as possible! You will need to know some basic crochet stitches such as single and double crochet. You’ll also need to have some understanding of how to read a pattern and work with diagrams, as taught in the beginners’ crochet course. Please bring yarn that you enjoy working with (cotton, acrylic or wool, 4ply or 8 ply) in a variety of colours and a matching crochet hook.

CUSHION CREATIONS WORKSHOP

1 Saturday - Saturday 6 September from 9am - 3pm

Cushions are integral to adding comfort, texture and colour to any room and it is so easy to make your own. This day long workshop will cover some basics of sewing and how to sew your own cushion covers. For those new to sewing we will make a simple cover with no closures and for those more experienced we can add closures, or even sew up a squab. At the end of the day you should leave with at least one completed cushion and the confidence to make more on your own. Sewing machines and tools will be provided, however students are to supply their own materials. If you wish to bring in your own sewing machine you may but please bring the user manual along as well.

Fees: NZ$80 - Bring your own fabric, cotton, cushion insert and zip if needed

LANDLORDS MASTERCLASS

This class will help you sharpen up your performance as a landlord so you are getting the best from your property investment AND being a great landlord to your tenants. Jackie Thomas-Teague is an experienced landlord, property manager, teacher, and recognised in the Rent Skills Highly Commended category 2023 (formerly ‘Landlord of the Year’) and will help you deal with tricky areas, things you don’t enjoy, or are not confident about, as well as making sure you are meeting all your obligations. This is a safe environment to talk about all things landlord-related, so no matter your experience and skill level, you are bound to get something valuable out of it, and have fun doing it. Jackie welcomes questions before class so she can tailor the content to match your specific needs’.

OVERLOCKER BASICS/SEWING WITH KNITS

An introduction to the overlocker, develop skills to use this equipment safely and efficiently. Learn how to use the overlocker for seaming knit garments. Prior Sewing experience essential. Some overlockers are available to use during the course or bring your own. Please let us know if you need to borrow one so that it can be booked in advance.

Sewing for Beginners

8 Thursday nights - Starts on 24 July from 6.30 - 8.30pm

** THIS CLASS IS NOW FULL ** This class is for people who are wanting to gain confidence with a sewing machine. Week 1 make a pin cushion; all the materials are supplied. Then week 2 start a shopping bag.. When your bag is complete you will be encouraged to choose another project that will help develop your sewing skills. This can include cushions, apron, double oven gloves, pot plant holders, pillowcases, kids shorts. This class is suitable for ESOL learners and the absolute beginner. You have the option of using a college Bernina Sewing machine or bring your own machine after the first 2 weeks and we can look at how to thread. At the first class, you will need to provide your National Student Number (NSN) or, if you don't have one, please bring your passport or birth certificate as proof of your NZ citizenship or residency.

The class will cater for intermediate sewers. All students will be helped, shown techniques and short cuts. Bring pattern, material & sewing kit, current sewing project, or idea to the first lesson.

UPHOLSTERY - Getting started (term 3) 3 sessions

3 Saturday mornings - Starts on 23 August from 9am - midday

** THIS COURSE IS NOW FULL ** This 3 week course is designed to get you started or help you continue on an existing project. A longer course will be offered in term 4. Refresh your existing furniture or lovingly restore that op shop find. Start with something simple like reupholstering a footstool, dining room chair or be prepared to do homework and/or a couple of terms and tackle a lounge chair. Modern, retro, vintage all can be refreshed. There are additional material costs. These will vary depending on the size of your project and the condition of your piece of furniture. In older chairs the foam may have decayed and will need to be replaced. You will need fabric and other materials depending on your project. What you will need to purchase will be determined as you discover what is underneath the fabric and what you can reuse. Sewing skills are essential. Also NO leather fabrics, Vinyl maybe Ok but only after discussion with the tutor. For the first session please bring your project, a large rubbish bag and a permanent marker. You don’t need to start anything before the first class but may need to do homework.

Learn wood working skills using hand tools and the type of power tools found in the home. Choose your own project at your level of ability and learn skills while completing the project. You provide your own materials. No recycled timber allowed. This course will be held at the Tawa Menz Shed Davies St, Tawa.
