Crochet is a great activity that settles your mind and is relaxing too. Crochet and the repetitive movements help the brain make more serotonin, which helps to decrease feelings of depression. Learn to crochet by making little projects (a flower keychain, bracelet and granny squares). Learn about different stitches and notations and how to read patterns & diagrams. Crochet is a relaxing and fun craft to learn, you can make awesome things for yourself or join a community craft group and crochet for a cause!

Paper comes from plants. Aotearoa has lots of really fibrous plants. So let’s make come paper from our local native plants. Come and learn how to make paper while making a new friend or two and developing a deeper appreciation for native plant resources. No experience necessary just a willingness to roll up your sleeves and get your hands wet! The paper we make takes a few days to dry and then will be posted back.

LEARN TO SEW: Tote Bag

This course is a perfect opportunity to learn some basic sewing skills. You will learn how to read a pattern, how to cut out fabric, how to thread a sewing machine and change settings, basic sewing skills (straight and curved seams) and hand sewing as you work on constructing a bag. The pattern will be provided by the tutor; you will need to supply fabric, zip and thread. Students may bring their own machine or use a college Bernina).

METAL JEWELLERY: Beginner (August)

Making silver rings and things…..learn a range of jewellery making techniques including forming, shaping, soldering, texturing, sawing, filing and finishing. The emphasis is on practical skills leading to finished items of jewellery. The silver for a ring and a bangle is included in the course costs as is copper to practice with, saw blades, solder etc. Silver to make additional items can be purchased at a reasonable price. All tools are provided. No previous experience necessary. We will be working with hot metal and tools so workshop clothing and covering footwear please; no open shoes, slides, sandals or jandals allowed. This is for your safety in the workshop.

METAL JEWELLERY: Silver & Stone Intermediate

. Stone setting is one of the most fun things you can do in a jewellery workshop – it’s a little bit magic, a little bit precision and one of the best ways to grow your skills. This is a one-day class where your creativity and all the techniques you learnt previously come together. We will be making a stone setting, soldering this on a ring and wearing it home. PATTERNS FROM YOUR FAVOURITE GARMENT:

Have you found a garment that fits you well and you wish you could clone it? By learning to create a pattern from an existing garment you will have the skills to do so. In this course you will be shown how to create a pattern from an existing garment. You will then have an opportunity to apply this knowledge as you work on your own pattern/s for your chosen garment/s. Sewing and/or basic pattern knowledge is recommended as you should be familiar with terms such as seam allowance, straight grain, bias, darts etc.

POTTERY: Intermediate Wheel Work (July)

This class is now FULL. This class is limited to 8 students. This course is only for those students who have completed at least one Beginners Wheelwork class or have an equivalent amount of wheel throwing experience. The aim of the course is to extend students who can already centre and throw a basic cylinder, and will provide tuition to begin making pieces that are larger and with more complex shapes, such as vases, jugs, pots with lids and types of serving dishes. Please note that glazing will be done on the final week, so it is essential that students can attend on that evening as there are no alternative opportunities to glaze work. The costs for clay, firing and glazing materials are extra and will vary depending on how much a student makes. Please bring $40 materials deposit payable in cash to the tutor on the first night. Some students may not use all this deposit however productive students may be required to pay more. This class is held at Gear Homestead Woolshed Potters clubrooms, Gear Homestead, Okowai Road Porirua and is for ADULTS ONLY.

This class is now FULL. Introduction to hand building with clay. Techniques covered are pinch pots, coils, slab work and glazing.
