Phil has been actively involved in a range of industries, including business services, communications, tertiary education, distribution, apparel, sport and social services sectors.
Phil is a former tertiary-level lecturer, at one of New Zealand's leading tertiary education institutions. He has taught Entrepreneurship, Marketing, Problem Solving / Decision Making, and post-graduate Leadership, Management, and Social Responsibility papers.
As a business advisor, Phil has provided assistance to more than 4,500 small and medium size businesses during his time with The Wellington Regional Chamber of Commerce, New Zealand Trade and Enterprise’s biz Information service, and in private practice. Phil is a mentor with Business Mentors New Zealand, and a business coach with New Zealand’s premier business growth specialists, The Icehouse. He has also assessed business plans for MSD's Flexi-wage applicants.
Phil has been a licensed business broker with New Zealand’s premier business brokering firm and he has inside knowledge on getting businesses into shape, drafting Information Memoranda, advising on sales strategies, etc.
In other roles, Phil was responsible for delivering the Wellington pilot of NZTE's Connect New Zealand program, which connected high-growth companies with the people and resources needed to springboard into international markets. He has also run business incubators at various locations around Wellington and he has been actively involved in delivery of the New Zealand Institute of Management’s Small Business Entrepreneurs Program.
At senior management level Phil has been chief executive at WelCAB (where he managed six Citizens Advice Bureau and two budgeting service branches) and deputy managing director at the New Zealand Institute of Sport (where he taught marketing and promotion, event management, sponsorship, administration and financial systems).
