Nina Paaka

Kia Ora, Ko Nina Paaka ahau. Ko Ngati Porou me Tuhoe oku iwi. I am currently studying for my diploma in Raranga level 5 at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa. I also teach adult educational classes in basic Raranga skills on Tuesday evenings at Tawa College. My husband and I are a collaboration of Raranga and Aerosol art, we and our two children reside in Titahi Bay. Nau mai, haere mai ki te ako Raranga.

Raranga 1 Day Wananga Intermediate
1 Sunday - On 22 November from 9am - 5pm

Minimum experience required (people who have made putiputi) - Kono/Konae. Also for the Experienced weaver - whiri kete or wall hanging Note: All registered students will be contacted by the tutor to discuss what they would like to create, where to harvest harakeke and what type of harakeke needed, preparation of harakeke and tools to be sourced for the day.

Raranga: Creating Taonga with Harakeke (Beginner)
8 Monday nights - Starts 12 October from 7-9pm

This class is now FULL. Come along and learn the basic knowledge and history of traditional and contemporary Maori weaving with Nina Paaka. Throughout the term you will learn reo Maori, tikanga o te whare pora (protocols within the house of weaving), how to harvest and prepare Harakeke (flax), learn how to weave putiputi (flowers), placemat/coaster, konae (2 sided purse) and wall hanging. This is a great way to start your raranga (weaving) journey, all beginners welcome.

Raranga: Creating Taonga with Harakeke (Intermediate)
8 Tuesday nights - Starts on 13 October from 7-9pm

This class is now FULL. This class is for those who are experienced at weaving with Harakeke and/or other materials. You must understand the tikanga, reo and how to prepare Harakeke for weaving. Minimum of experience – putiputi, kono and konae. This class is a pathway for those that wish to move on from the beginners class. You will learn how to weave whiri kete and are welcome to inquire about weaving other items. Come along and become one of our Tuakana weavers and 'get your weave on'.
