Learn how to dye fabric using Procion dyes. This class is mainly aimed at people who want to make small lengths of fabric for quilting or embroidery, but it is also possible to dye children’s T-shirts or other small items of clothing. Learn how to mix dyes and make colour graduations, try scrunch dyeing, basic shibori and tie-dye, multi-coloured dyeing and ice dyeing. Students should end up with approximately 6 metres of dyed fabric or the equivalent in dyed clothing.

This class is now FULL. This class is an introduction to throwing clay on a pottery wheel or for extension for students who have done a previous wheelwork course. Students learn to centre clay on the wheel and the basics of throwing the foundation shapes of cylinders and bowls. Please note that glazing will be done on the final week, so it is essential that students can attend on that evening as there are no alternative opportunities to glaze work. The costs for clay, firing and glazing materials are extra and will vary depending on how much a student makes. Please bring $30 materials deposit payable in cash to the tutor on the first night. Some students may not use all this deposit however productive students may be required to pay more. POTTERY: Hand Building (July)

This class is now FULL. Introduction to hand building with clay or extension for previous students. Techniques covered are pinch pots, coils, slab work and glazing. Raranga 1 Day Wananga Intermediate

Raranga: Creating Taonga with Harakeke (Beginner)

This class is FULL.Come along and learn the basic knowledge and history of traditional and contemporary Maori weaving with Nina Paaka. Throughout the term you will learn reo Maori, tikanga o te whare pora (protocols within the house of weaving), how to harvest and prepare Harakeke (flax), learn how to weave putiputi (flowers), placemat/coaster, konae (2 sided purse) and wall hanging. This is a great way to start your raranga (weaving) journey, all beginners welcome.

This class is for those who are experienced at weaving with Harakeke and/or other materials. You must understand the tikanga, reo and how to prepare Harakeke for weaving. You will learn how to weave whiri kete and are welcome to inquire about weaving other items. Come along and become one of our Tuakana weavers and 'get your weave on'.
