DYEING COTTON:

Learn how to dye fabric using Procion dyes. This class is mainly aimed at people who want to make small lengths of fabric for quilting or embroidery, but it is also possible to dye children’s T-shirts or other small items of clothing. Learn how to mix dyes and make colour graduations, try scrunch dyeing, basic shibori and tie-dye, multi-coloured dyeing and ice dyeing. Students should end up with approximately 6 metres of dyed fabric or the equivalent in dyed clothing.

Fees: NZ$85 - Plus $25 for materials for tutor


Needs list

6 metres of white pure cotton or linen fabric such as homespun,  lawn, or pure cotton poplin. Must be WASHED. Please note : Calico and poly-cotton fabrics are not suitable as they resist the dye.

 

Dust mask (facemask)

rubber gloves

apron

3 (or more) buckets

any 2 litre icecream containers you have at home

any large yoghurt containers you have at home

6 (or more ) recycled plastic teaspoons or measuring spoons (not to be used for food ever again)

1 large sheet of plastic i.e a rubbish bag or drop cloth (to cover workspace)

Old serving spoons, drumsticks, wooden sticks for mixing dye in buckets

plastic bags to take wet fabric home

1 packet of sandwich size ziplock bags

 

Any of these if you have them

marbles, plastic string, plastic woodworking clamps, small wooden blocks or ice-block sticks.
