GENEALOGY IN THE DIGITAL AGE: Next Step

3 Monday nights - Starts 28 May from 7-9pm (fortnightly)

This course will be held fortnightly on 28 May, 11 June and 25 June. This course is for those who have completed the beginner course, or whose skills have progressed beyond the basic steps of births, marriages, and deaths. It is mostly using internet-based resources but we will look at using physical archives and resources, also. It is intended that the course provide practical tuition in using data and setting up paper-based and computer-based family trees. We will look at records from overseas, particularly in the United Kingdom and Ireland, and will touch on genealogical resources in other countries such as those in Australia, Europe, Canada, and United States of America. It may be necessary to take out subscriptions to genealogical websites, on a short-term, free-of-cost basis, eg Ancestry, Find My Past, Scotland's People, but we will also learn about other places that are free to use.

Orchestra

The Tawa Orchestra is a community orchestra that attracts players of all ages and walks of life. No audition required – minimum standard Grade V. You will learn the dynamics of being part of a full orchestra including rehearsal techniques, sectionals, and performance. The Tawa Orchestra will perform at least 3 concerts throughout the year and may include collaborations with other community groups and visiting artists. New members can join at any time.

While demonstrations and advice on technique will be geared toward oil painters, artists who are more comfortable working in other mediums are welcome.

Raranga: Creating Taonga with Harakeke (Beginner)

Learn how to harvest and prepare Harakeke (flax), including kohua (boiling), weave putiputi a place mat and a wall hanging while using traditional techniques and methods, including karakia, tikanga and Te reo Maori. This class is great for those with no experience to minimum experience. I believe the most important part of weaving is the preparation and basics, I am privileged to be able to teach you and guide you through your first stages of Raranga.
