Objectives:

  1. Learn the basic techniques for making a rag rug and
  2. Make a small mat or cushion cover using the following steps:
  • Designing the pattern – different designs and styles
  • Preparing the backing
  • Transferring the pattern to the backing
  • Setting the backing in the frame
  • Techniques for inserting the pile – hooking and prodding
  • Finishing off – removing from the frame, blocking and hemming
  • Other methods of making rugs e.g. braiding, crotcheting, latch hook can be included if the learners want this and if time permits.
  1. All classes will be practical with some background learning about the craft of rug making incorporated throughout the classes and includes:
  • Learning about the history of rug making in England, the US and Canada, and New Zealand, the social contexts and environments where rugs were made.
  • Look at some images of historical and contemporary rugs, learn about the designers and makers, different styles of rug.
  • Surviving rugs and where to find them.

Class Materials:

Some materials &  backing will be provided. Students will want to collect/provide their own scraps too. 

Janet will bring a range of tools & frames for students to try out and use during class times and will help students to select and make their own tools & frames starting in first session. 
 
Frames and tools can be home made for little or no cost if student is handy.  Commercial rug tools can be ordered on line and cost between $6 to $12 plus postage (group order possible if there is demand). Delivery takes about a week.  Wooden frames can be made quickly and easily in class - cost depends on size but around $10 if new timber is purchased - old scraps cut the cost, or embroidery frames are ok if student has one.

Refund requests must be made in writing to the Co-ordinator.   Prior to the course commencing, a 20% administration cost will be removed from the refund. No refund will be available 24 hours prior to the course starting or once the course has started. A full refund is available should the Coordinator cancel the course.
